Timewave Zero and Targeted Psi Advertising

Updated: Nov 25

February 2022 -

Nothing to see here, just a couple of mind frying syncs to close out the month. First off, while I'm walking my dogs one morning I suddenly start thinking about the movie Mandy, which is pretty goddamn excellent if you for some reason haven't checked it yet.

It's basically like stoner/doom metal the film, but that's neither here nor there. What's cosmic is that the following morning when I turn on my tv internet interface majig (shorthand for thingamjig), that exact film is advertised with a thumbnail on the splash page. What's primarily compelling about this involves the fact that I immediately think to myself:

"Oh yeah, that's coming up because I was searching it the other day or whatever."

Then I realize, wait, no I wasn't. I was thinking about it while walking around the neighborhood. I never searched a thing nor even mentioned it out loud. It then occurs to me that maybe I was thinking about it because it was on the splash page the previous morning but again quickly realize that nope. I was thinking about it because I listened to a Seattle psych rock band produced by the same dude who did the soundtrack the night before. It legit felt like a targeted advert pulling from my thoughts but of course I know that the tv machine is made of thoughts in the first place. All the cool kids know that. Welcome to the future, which is now, yesterday, and never (in the space between space).

The following day I have Hypermodern Jazz 2000.5 on in the car, which isn't actually what I was planning on listening to, but had started playing after Squeeze the Trigger had ended days earlier. Since I was driving I didn't want to switch it but now I wasn't driving so I pulled up what I wanted but in doing so thought to myself:

Remember how I'd completely forgotten about the existence of that album until some metal band used the exact same alien DNA art a quarter century later?

My copy was stolen back in roughly 2003 and until I saw the image my entire recollection of the disc had vanished completely, but I had in fact bought it again because of the anamnesis experience.

I thought this quite specifically while I switched over to some Girls Against Boys.

Anyway, that night I'm kind of drunk and I check my e-mail to see if there were any new mixes of this project I've been working on. There weren't and I never check my e-mail on weekends, but I've been on this metal promo distribution chain for years because of something I wrote (I still have no idea what). Even though I mostly ignore the e-mails, one time it got me an interview with Dave Wyndorf so I've never opted out.

But I almost never click either. I also never check it when I'm drunk and there's a Terrence McKenna reference right in one of the subject lines. But of course these circumstances present themselves to me so I bite and download an album entitled Timewave Zero.

As I throw it in iTunes I'm like, waaaaaait a freaking minute. Blood Incantation? Is that the exact fucking band who's name I couldn't place earlier in the day? The one with the Hypermodern Jazz art? I look it up and yes.

So on the evening of the day I'm thinking about how I rediscovered Hypermodern Jazz because of a band I couldn't remember, I accidentally download their new album later that night. All very anti-structural behavior I might point out, as I wasn't planning on listening to the Alec Empire joint, or the new Incantation outing. On a side note, Timewave Zero isn't a bad ambient album (100% metal free). Honestly, a lot of it wouldn't sound at all out of place on the Mandy soundtrack, because of course it wouldn't.

One more thing. As I'm pulling out of a hypnagogic state one morning I'm informed:

"This all started with one line of code all the way back in 1666."

I figured I'd just throw that one out there and bounce. Audi.
